Q: What is it?
A: For some people, recognising one’s potential can be in a flash, while, for others, it becomes apparent
over a longer period. Either way, we believe that the person being coached has all the answers – we’re just the
sounding board providing a framework and a trusting environment.
Q: What’s so good about your approach?
A: At StraughanConsulting, we use a systematic approach to help individuals to find fulfilment in their
personal and professional lives. The two are inextricably linked.
Q: What’s involved?
A: There is an early discussion about client expectations. The role of the coach is explained at this point.
Next comes a session during which the individual is able to identify their goals and establish a process for
achieving them. We usually follow this with one, two or more monitor and review sessions at which progress is
discussed. Additional email and phone coaching can be provided if necessary but the aim is to give the individual
the tools and techniques for moving on.
Q. Do you walk the talk and use a life coach yourself?
A. It is reasonable to expect that behind every successful life coach, there is another life coach
providing a safe, objective environment in which they can grow personally and professionally.
Just as a football coach will seek support from others in the game, the life coach benefits from having
someone who can provide a fresh perspective or an endorsement. This process reminds us of what the client is
likely to go through and, therefore, strengthens our ability to empathise and develop rapport with the client.
Q: What do your clients say?
A: They say that process helps them to work towards reaching their potential. They speak enthusiastically
about how they have witnessed the powerful results that can be achieved by commitment to action.
The coach is able to help the client to visualise what success looks like as if they’ve already achieved
their goals. They now know what they’re striving for.
Identifying the various strategies for success works best when people have someone to” bounce thoughts off”,
someone who does not criticise or judge any of my ideas. The client has the answers but, with the right person
probing and listening, the rate of progress can be amazing.
